Swedish national TV made a visit to the Nordic Genetic Resources Center today to cover the budget crisis at the institute. In short: if the budget situation is not resolved – in the wost case scenario: half the staff can be noticed and loose the job in the beginning of next year; and the Nordic countries may start to loose the genebank collection of genetic resources carefully preserved during more than three decades.

Even with the full support from the staff at the genebank, and voiced objections from the board members of Norway and Iceland, the director choose to resign last week. Arni Brageson from Iceland is appointed new temporary director and is starting next week. Some critical voices say that the budget crisis is a long-time budget deficit and severe under-funding of the genebank basic operations for many years (if not to say decades). The genebank is running behind on routine tests for the seed collections as well as the required regeneration to maintain the genebank collection of living seed samples.

Comment: The budget deficit has now (April 2011) been solved with extra funds made available to secure the sustainable operation of the genebank.
